<silence> Good morning, Tulsa lawn care community. Kevin here with kicking grass and taking names. Lawn care folks. Let’s talk about, uh, height cutting. Let’s just cut right down into it. Talk about the height, how high we should cut, how low we should cut, uh, things like that. Uh, why do you wanna talk about height? Because, uh, why not? It’s something to talk about about grass. Everyone thinks, uh, you know, you just go through and you mow your yard and you don’t think about it. And for the most part, if your yard gets a lot of sun, yeah, you’re right. There are so many different things to do to your yard to help keep it healthy. Okay? Um, surprisingly, cutting it too short can shock. It can damage, it can allow for disease to set in and fungus and all sorts of different things and cause you a lot of issues.
While most people, in fact, almost all people I come across who have a yard think the shorter it is, the better Tulsa lawn care community. You could not be more wrong. What, yes, I, I understand you may have different experiences and, and stuff like that. It maybe you’re just lucky. Maybe the neighbors around you, uh, take care of their lawn, you know, um, like they get sprayed and stuff like that. So you’re just, you’re just getting lucky. You need to have a certain specific height for your lawn, and it’s not even that you set it and forget it. It’s, it needs to change with the, with the season or as the season progresses and, and different things like that. So don’t sit here and think, oh, let me just set it and forget it. You’ve got to know the season you’re in. You’ve got to know, uh, how to cut it and it, it, it can even be a cut by cut basis, you know?
Uh, if it’s grown a lot and you’ve got a sensitive yard, you, you don’t want to cut a whole bunch off, otherwise you may, you may brown it and, and make it go into, uh, hibernation or, uh, just shock it. There’s, there’s all sorts of different things that you can do. Um, now if you’re a lawn enthusiast, let’s say, and you are cutting yours like you’re supposed to every about five, four to five days, then you probably won’t face that problem. Okay? Same height, same everything, but you know, there at one point you may have to skip a mo in order to let it to grow up a little bit, and you cut it a little bit less that way, um, because no matter what, as the seasons progress, so in the spring, uh, you wanna start off real short, real low, okay? Um, golf course load, no matter, no matter your lawn almost, you know, fescue’s always the exception, but Tulsa Lawn Care community, um, as the seasons progress, you want to progress with your height.
Uh, meaning, you know, one or two months may be at, uh, two and a half. Uh, the next month or so may be at, uh, two and three quarters, uh, but by August, you know, you’re, you’re really thinking three for Bermuda, okay? And that’s pretty much how you want to play. Most of them may be a little bit longer with your Zoya, maybe three and a quarter, something like that, you know, but still, same, the pro, same line of progression. Okay? Uh, the reason why a little bit long with the Zoya is, uh, you know, it’s, it’s a, it doesn’t need as much sun, uh, but you still want to give it length and, and stuff like that. So, uh, fesco on the other hand, you know, uh, you, you may even stop mowing fesco altogether when it starts to get really hot, uh, just because it’s not going to grow, uh, over a certain temperature.
Uh, Tulsa lawn care community fesco is a very interesting, interesting grass you may go to having to mow it weekly in the spring and fall, and to mowing nothing during the summer. Uh, and the only reason why I say that is because depending on, on where your fescue is and how it’s, uh, set up and, and taken care of and stuff like that, literally during the heat of the summer, it may be done growing. Uh, especially if it’s shaded and things like that, it, it may not grow at all. Uh, now if it’s out in the open and stuff like that, you may need a good mo every, uh, every week or two weeks. But really past that Tulsa lawn care community, you’re, you’re not gonna experience too much growth, uh, with your fescue in the dead of heat. Uh, but again, uh, it per fescue, you do want to keep it short in the, in the spring.
Um, but as it progresses, you’re going to want to lengthen, uh, significantly, uh, to where you’re not even dropping your mower or you deck or anything like that. In fact, you’re raising it all the way up if it’s a push mower and if it’s a zero turn or one of those type of mowers, you know, you’re not lowering it at all because you want that, you want that height, you really want it nice and cleared and cleaned up and, and, and all that. Uh, you want those, uh, clippings to spread out far and wide too. Um, and then it also depends how thick your SCU is. If it’s fairly thick, you may want to even go ahead and bag it, uh, just to help keep the clippings off because, uh, fescue is a true grass, a very needy grass, and one that you must, uh, watch, maintain, and monitor, uh, in order to keep it healthy and nice and, and clean and, and good looking.
So, uh, Bermuda though, on the other hand, uh, you know, three is pretty tall for Bermuda, uh, roughly about three inches, you know, on mowers aren’t really set on inches. They’re just kind of set to a specific height. You kind of figure out your height as you mow your, your properties and stuff like that. But about three inches is where you want it. So wherever you can figure that out on your mower, uh, however that is some mowers, uh, claim to be at, at certain heights and stuff like that. But, uh, to be safe, I would get out a ruler and measure your mower off that way, that way you know, what setting is what, um, a lot of ’em no longer even mark it anymore because too many people were under the impression that it was already set per inch. And when it’s not, uh, now within its own mechanism, it is, uh, set up by a quarter of inches, majority of them.
Uh, but it is not like set to from the ground up because you’ve gotta realize, you’ve gotta realize, I don’t care who you are, even if you sit your mower to off three inches off the ground, your ground is not even, it is not a flat, even smooth surface. It is bumpy. It is hilly, it’s got divots, it’s got holes. You’re gonna go up and down and, and, and all sorts of different directions, right? So you need to understand that your height is going to change as you mow. And if you believe that it’s not, and you believe that it’s supposed to be a nice flat even surface than you, my friend, are mistaken, uh, Tulsa lawn care community ground is, is not flat. It, it, you know, it moves as soon as it gets wet. And, uh, different things like that, you know, something heavy steps on it, pushes on it.
It, it changes, it moves, it flows. It’s, it’s, it’s a, it’s becomes liquidy almost, and, and it, it kind of comes and moves around. So you’ve gotta understand that things are going to change and you’ve gotta just kind of come with a ballpark of a height area that you want understand. Some places may get scalped and some places may be super high and thick, but that’s just because it’s the, the nature of the game. So height does affect the, the lawn. A nice lawn at the right height will help itself. In other words, it’ll keep the diseases and fungus and all sorts of different things off of the, uh, you know, turf and, and, and stuff like that. It’ll keep it going strong. Um, again, if you, if you cut the yard or, or the grass at the wrong height, the wrong time, uh, it can do damage in the essence of being, allowing all that stuff to set in, settle in and stuff like that.
Uh, the main thing that you really want to avoid is going to short, uh, especially going into the fall, uh, because that’s when the sunlight becomes less and some lawns really need a lot of sun, uh, in order to prosper and things like that. So you need to give it as much blade as possible while still looking good. Um, especially with your, your Bermudas and things like that. Um, that’s why your Bermudas disappear underneath the shades and something like that, because it’s like, oh, well, there’s no sunlight underneath there. I don’t want to be under there. They, they only want to produce in the sunlight, uh, which is great finding. Wonderful. Okay, so please, please understand, uh, that we have a method to our madness, and I understand that, oh, you just mowed my lawn and it doesn’t look like you mowed. Okay, cool. Well, mowing it shorter is not gonna help it out.
Um, if anything, it might cause you more issues later on. Uh, you might have nice grass now, but then you may end up with crab grass and other things like that. And uh, also if your lawn is all of a sudden shaggy within a day or two, you may already have crab grass, uh, that typically crab grass typically grows back the fastest. Uh, it’s, it’s very thick, uh, and stinky and holds water and, and just, it’s all sorts of nastiness. Um, and a lot of people have that thinking. It’s regular grass thinking, oh, it’s nice grass, it’s not, and it looks great once you mow it, but literally within 24 hours, it’s gonna look like it needs to be mowed again. Um, it, it’s also very thick when it cuts. Uh, so it lays down heavy discharge, uh, in clumps. So then you end up, uh, matting down certain areas and, and different things like that. So it ends up just causing all sorts of issues, possibly even blotting out areas of your, of your yard because it, it just causes it to
Too much discharge and clumping and, and kills certain areas. So then you have little hole spots and, and all sorts of things like that. And this is, that’s if you’re not cutting it right, uh, crab grass needs to be cut quite often, to be honest with you. Um, that’s something you really want to keep an eye on.
